The Mulch-A-Matic Process. . .

One of the biggest problems we face in trail construction at Camp Murphy is sugar sand. The early part of this year saw a combination of drought conditions and increased trail use. Sandy holes developed in the trail, especially in areas where there was little canopy and no natural mulch. Throwing cypress mulch down over these spots proved to be the easiest, cheapest and most natural looking solution. We also learned that if we tilled the mulch into the sand to a depth of four to six inches, the mulch stayed put, gave us a firm riding surface and it looked  more natural than mulch on the surface.
